It's that time of year again! I so wish I could be in Van right now to go see what the Textile Art grads have done this year at their year-end show.  I missed it last year too :(

But you should go!

It opens on May 22nd at Seymour Gallery in Deep Cove.  Details below.

I've been following Craig Sinclair's blog, My Daily Image since 2008.  I love his unpretentious style.  I find his photos honest and telling, each one a narrative in itself, and they work wonderfully collectively.  Each photo posted represents the day it was taken and is marked as such as the title of the post.  Above are some of my recent favourites.

P.S. he's the guy who photographed my East Hastings yarn bomb a few years back.

Based on a picture taken behind the Museum of Anthropology this limited edition Intaglio print is by Denise Tonner who works out of the Dundarave Print Shop on Granville Island.  What a great local memento!

Today I visited the Musee de Beaux Arts for the Jean-Paul Gautier show.  I am not ashamed to say that it was not my first visit to this particular exhibit, nor will it be my last.  I just can't get enough of the amazing designs heavily adorned with fur, ribbon, layered cloth and pleating or encrusted with beading, Swarovski crystals, french knots, and buttons.

I loved how many of the mannequins had projected videos for faces and were talking and singing;  it gave the show an eeriness that seemed suitable to the dim lighting and overall dark, dramatic feel (Although there was one particularly flirtatious sailor who gave me the giggles).

Enjoy the photos, sorry for the poor quality.

There's a cool new segment on the Vancouver Is Awesome blog called The Opening, where they feature local artists, shows and interesting people in the visual arts community in Van.  Check it out here.  A few weeks ago they featured artist and associate curator for the Vancouver Art Gallery, Kathleen Ritter.  She was responsible for the How Soon Is Now show at the VAG which featured some textile based artists, (ie.Kristi Malakof - above).

And speaking of fibre-based art, there is a must-see show at the Richmond Art Gallery, Fibred Optics, on until August 28th. Read a review here in Canadian Art Magazine.   Montreal based artist Jerome Havre (above) is one of the featured artists.

Oh so sweet are these polymer clay babies by Powell River artist Camille Allen.  At 4.5 inches long baby Cade is actually one of the larger of Camille's sculptures; some are as tiny as 1.75".  Can you imagine knitting or crocheting an itty bitty hat for these little guys?  And I'm over here griping about using small needles for my 16 inch doll.  I guess all one ever needs is perspective.
