Janna's 2020 Make Nine

Picture
Okay, I've settled on nine makes for the year! I used The School of SweetGeorgia, online Plan Your Make Nine workshop to help me narrow my list down.
https://www.schoolofsweetgeorgia.com/ref/jannamaria/

Two knits are on currently my needles, the Ambershore Shawl and the Mark of the Hand shawl. I hope to get those done AND the Ripple Crop Top Worsted in time for Fibres West on March 13th. Wish me luck!

1) Raven Pullover/Caroline Dick
2) Deschain / Leila Raven
3) Snow Goose / Caitlin Shepherd. I plan on steeking this and turning it into a cardigan
4) Mark of the Hand / Yvonne Stowell. I'm knitting my second one in Everlea's Organic Merino Sport to get a feel for the pattern in wool instead of the recommended alpaca/linen (which I love).
5) Ripple Crop Top Worsted / Jessie Maed
6) Ambershore / Inese Sang
7) Meet & Separate Table Runner/ I teach this beginner tapestry weaving technique at the School of SweetGeorgia and Felicia has the great idea of making it into a table runner. I just received a beautiful hand-me-down table that I am eager to make even more homy. So I'm on board with this idea now, too.
8) Hemma mitts / Inese Sang
9) Equal Night /Sylvia McFadden. This will be my second Equal Night blanket which I knit only half-size. Both are gifts for my niece and nephew.

Do you have a make list for 2020, or do you like to make as you go?

Are you hesitant to use hand-dyed yarn?

This is a must watch Vlog from Felicia Lo of SweetGeorgia Yarns.

Felicia talks about the top ten fears that knitters have shared with her about knitting with hand-dyed yarns and what we need to know and consider about each one. I assure you, you will learn AT LEAST one thing from this video.

January Newsletter

The following is from our January newsletter which was originally sent to our mailing list subscribers one week ago today. Sign up to receive it in yours!

Hey there! It's me, Janna Vallee, popping in to let you know what's going on with me and some of the textile folk around greater Vancouver and beyond.

I’ve been keeping busy between designing new workshops, teaching after-school textile programs in local public schools and spending time between my two Sunshine Coast textile studios, one of which is brand new. You can now shop my entire Everlea Yarn collection and stay for tea and conversation at my new wee shop, inside the coolest shop and artist hub in Gibsons BC, The Kube Studios. I'm there on weekends.

Ambershore shawl by Inese Sang knit in Everlea Yarn's Naturally Dyed Organic Merino Fingering (Madder, Twilight & Water colourways)

On my looms and needles

I'm currently weaving a tapestry commission as well as knitting up a storm for some new samples to show at my Fibres West booth (it's coming up fast. Yay for spring!) Above is my Ambershore shawl, by local designer Inese Sang, in my naturally dyed Organic Merino Fingering in the colourways Water, Twilight and Madder.

~ There is a bundle of this exact trio in my shop if you want to snag the last few from these same dye lots. Pick up at Fibre West is available ~
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This shawl is only my second-ever attempt at colourwork knitting and I've learned a lot. It's also my first time knitting a pattern by Inese and the clarity and ease that this pattern offers is brilliant - I'm so grateful!
I've still made a whole bunch of mistakes, though - at no fault of the designer of course, including increasing in the wrong place at the center stitches twice due to my strange decision not to use stitch markers. I refuse to rip back all that knitting, or ladder back to attempt to fix it in case I mess up and then HAVE to rip back all that knitting. The way I usually knit anyhow is that as long as it more or less looks good and doesn't mess up the overall design and stitch count, I let mistakes lay where they may. I discovered last year that for that reason I am a terrible test knitter.

I am 100% a process maker. I love a good story, and evidence of process even more. Don't small mistakes offer character in all circumstances? Let's call it a symbol of resilience that the overall design is barely affected by all my errors. So, this cosy handmade treasure will be held tight as a symbol of comfort for more than its warmth and tactility.

So, that's me right now.
What's happening locally? So much!

About the Everlea Guide to Vancouver Yarn

Hi, I'm Janna. I'm the proprietor and natural dyer at Everlea Yarn, and the tapestry instructor at The School of SweetGeorgia. I am a tapestry weaver, longtime knitter and 2013 graduate of Concordia University's Fibres and Material Practices program.

I created Vancouver Yarn in 2008 as a space to hold as much of the textile awesomeness that I could find in and around Vancouver. Here on the VY blog I mostly share about local events, pattern releases as well as share Community Highlights.

Do you have an event, KAL, yarn or pattern release, launch or other thing you want us to post? Just fill out the form above or send your press release to me at
     janna (at) vancouveryarn.com

    Thank you,
    Janna
