Embroidery Workshop with Sadie Gilker: 6pm
GA Doors (Bring your own craft!): 7pm Show: 7:30pm All Ages with 19+ bar Craft Club Cinema this month is a romantic and drama-filled screening of Sense and Sensibility. Come and watch the Dashwood sisters contend with regency-era England while knitting, sketching, cross stitching, or any crafts you're enjoying. We'll keep the house lights soft and will have some lamps scattered throughout the venue, but feel free to bring your own book lights. Whether you're a dedicated maker, trying out a new hobby, or just craving a relaxed, communal night with fellow crafters, Craft Club Cinema is designed to help you slow down, connect, and enjoy a unique experience in the Hollywood Theatre. Not sure what to make? Want to learn something new? We got you. Purchase a workshop ticket for a hands-on embroidery workshop before the show led by local artist and educator Sadie Gilker (they/she). For this workshop, Sadie will be guiding workshop participants through a Regency-era embroidery sampler, adapted from early 19th-century needlework patterns. Come make a fully functional Jane Austen-era handkerchief! Or keep it in the hoop to decorate your home. All materials are provided. Spots are limited! Sadie Gilker is an avid embroiderer, painter, and designer whose practice explores texture, memory, and the natural world. With over 10 years of embroidery experience and a teaching approach rooted in sustainability and collective care, Sadie creates a welcoming space for all skill levels." Join Janna Vallee, of Everlea Looms, in Gibsons on April 25th from 11am-4pm to Weave an Everlea Gradient
Learn the art of weaving an Everlea Gradient using tapestry techniques and a gorgeous array of plant dyed yarns, dyed by Janna at Everlea Looms. You will create a one-of-a-kind 4"X4" weaving (or begin a 4"X6"and finish it at home) showcasing complex, stunning colour harmonies. Your finished artwork can be hung on a wall or used as a coaster, or vignette textile. What is an Everlea Gradient? Using Everlea's naturally dyed organic merino yarns, you will learn to weave two gradient colourways woven at the same time working in opposite value directions alongside each other on your loom. You will weave one gradient from light to dark, while the other gradient weaves from dark to light. We will talk about the ways in which colour theory plays a part in our colour decisions and Janna will share many samples of colour combinations that she has used and you are welcome to mimic, or create your own unique combination of colours from dozens of colourway options. With the help of Janna you get to choose the 10 colourways that you will use in your weaving. Skill Level: This workshop is beginner friendly. Never woven before? No problem! Cost: $120 plus supplies Supplies: $25 for just the yarn, or $88+ for yarn and loom depending on the loom you choose. If you are bringing your own non-Everlea loom it must be able to weave 6 ends-per-inch and you will contact Janna to make sure it will work for the workshop. She will also give you loom preparation instructions. Please sign this petition and help us make a difference. Join me for a fun afternoon in my new crash course for the most important tapestry skill, hatching.
Tapestry is the art of weaving images, but did you know that one of its core techniques involves blending colours directly on the loom? This method, known as hatching, allows weavers to create light and shadow, suggest transparency, and seamlessly merge two or more colours to employ optical colour blending as a way to create a third, blended colour—eliminating the need to dye additional yarns, a practice referred to as the Economy of Colour. In this workshop, students will receive a crash course in hatching as they weave a small tapestry, incorporating one or more shapes using the colourways of their choice. About the Everlea Guide to Vancouver Yarn Hi, I'm Janna. I'm the proprietor, maker and natural dyer at Everlea Looms. I am a tapestry weaver, longtime knitter and 2013 graduate of Concordia University's Fibres and Material Practices program. In 2008 I created Vancouver Yarn as a space to hold as much of the textile awesomeness that I could find in and around Vancouver. Here on the VY blog I mostly share about local events. It soon grew to include all the places you can shop for yarny things online in Canada. Do you have an event you'd like me to post? Simply email me at janna (at) everleayarn.ca Thank you, Janna
