2/17/2021 0 Comments What is Tapestry? image from Janna's tapestry workshops at the School of SweetGeorgia When I heard Felicia Lo interview weaver Maryanne Moodie on the SweetGeorgia Show about her weaving practice I was thrilled to hear a brief mention of tapestry weaving. It was literally just a passing comment about how tapestry has more rules than the kind of weaving she does. But, for her to bring attention to those differences felt exciting - which just goes to show how educating people about the nuances of weaving really does make me happy. The biggest impact I think is that the more non-weavers know about the different kinds of weaving the more informed they will be when choosing which classes to take (in person or online) if and when they decide to learn. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you're not a weaver you won't necessarily know if two different artworks employ vastly different techniques from each other. It's just weaving right? They are both woven cloth - what could be so different? You might be surprised to learn that the type of weaving that I do can not be done on the same looms Maryanne Moodie weaves on and, as she mentioned on the SweetGeorgia show, nor are the techniques the same. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tapestry is unique in that it allows the weaver to project whatever image they desire onto the loom. As such, there are certain rules for weaving which are in place to allow the weaver to create pictures with the fewest technical hurdles. Tapestry is one of the few types of weaving where your design can be abstract, or representational, figurative or landscape. If you want to weave pictures, tapestry is the medium to learn. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did you know that I offer a series of online tapestry weaving classes at the School of SweetGeorgia (SOS)?
