Janna's residency at Fibreworks

A post shared by EVERLEA TEXTILES (@everleatextiles) on Jul 13, 2017 at 4:29pm PDT

Hi there, just popping in to invite you to come visit me and my work during my upcoming weaving residency at Fibreworks Studio and Gallery (AKA The Yurts) in Madeira Park on the Sunshine Coast.

During my initial 10 day residency (June 26th -July 2nd and July 11th-13th) I'll will be exploring the ways in which relational art is either embraced or alienated in the context of an art gallery. I'll be weaving weft-faced tapestry for a body of work which is being created in collaboration with Katherine Earle as part of our years-long experiment in re-articulating our relationship as art. I'm interested in both the evocative nature of the familiarity of the photographs I'll be interpreting into cloth, as well as the problematic nature of attempting to make tangible the complexity of a living moment.

In addition to public visiting hours you are invited to join me on Saturday July 1st from 12-3 for a skillshare event where visitors can receive soft instruction on the art of tapestry weaving in a laid-back social setting. Bring your own tapestry loom, or build one out of PVC, and I'll show you how to use it. Instruction is free and there will be warp and weft for sale, or you can bring your own.

Fibreworks Studio and Gallery is currently exhibiting Beyond the Basics, a juried exhibition of basketry inspired by the teachings of renowned basketry artist, Jackie Abrams of Vermont, though to July 23rd. I visited the show today and it is absolutely gorgeous. I am very excited to work alongside it soon.

For those of you who might come from out of town the studio is an hour-long drive from the Langdale ferry terminal. Pender Harbour is a beautiful place to camp or B&B. I recommend a trip to LaVernes Diner in Garden Bay for home-cut fries, handmade veggie burgers and a milkshake before spending an afternoon at Katherine or Ruby Lake. Klein Lake is a great spot for camping and is available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Janna's Residency
June 26th - July 2nd and July 11th -13th 2017, August 25th-28th, September 26-28
Free weaving skillshare on Saturday July 1st 12-3

About the Everlea Guide to Vancouver Yarn

Hi, I'm Janna. I'm the proprietor and natural dyer at Everlea Yarn, and the tapestry instructor at The School of SweetGeorgia. I am a tapestry weaver, longtime knitter and 2013 graduate of Concordia University's Fibres and Material Practices program.

I created Vancouver Yarn in 2008 as a space to hold as much of the textile awesomeness that I could find in and around Vancouver. Here on the VY blog I mostly share about local events, pattern releases as well as share Community Highlights.

Do you have an event, KAL, yarn or pattern release, launch or other thing you want us to post? Just fill out the form above or send your press release to me at

    Thank you,
    Janna

Vancouver Yarn is a free resource which links you to local DIY textile shops and designers as well as artists and makers which are local to greater Vancouver BC, unceded Coast Salish territory, and throughout so-called British Columbia. I also list online shops and designers from around the country.

Many of my links come from your submissions - Thank you! If you tell me about a dyer, designer, shop etc I will add it.
